During the devastating and uncertain days of the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, the world came to a sudden halt. Fear, confusion, and helplessness surrounded people everywhere as life was confined within homes. In that critical moment, driven by a strong sense of humanity, we took the initiative to stand beside those in need.

This initiative was originally started by me personally. Later, I was joined by my close friend Ifty Warid, who is based in the United Kingdom, and my fellow theatre artist Liton Gel. Together, we formed and operated this humanitarian effort under the name “Khowai Theatre Commando Team.”

We were not a large organization; we were simply a group of individuals united by responsibility and compassion. Our primary focus was to provide food assistance and medical support to sick and vulnerable people during the lockdown period.

Throughout the crisis, we strictly followed all health guidelines and safety protocols while staying actively engaged in serving people. We worked day and night, responding to phone calls, identifying urgent needs, and ensuring timely delivery of assistance to affected families.

We personally delivered food aid to households and extended medical support wherever required. Our goal was to respond quickly and effectively to those who were struggling the most during that time of crisis.

I personally led this initiative and was actively involved in traveling day and night to reach people in need. My teammates worked alongside me with equal dedication and commitment. We functioned as a single unit where individual identity was secondary—humanity was our only identity. This mission was never about recognition or personal gain. It was purely driven by responsibility towards humanity and the urgent need to support lives during an unprecedented global crisis.

A significant support throughout this journey came from my friend Ifty Warid, who, despite living abroad, continuously supported us morally and practically, strengthening our efforts from a distance. It is also important to mention that our commitment was not limited to the COVID-19 period alone. We have consistently stood by people during various disasters and emergencies, and we continue to do so with the same dedication.

This experience has taught us one fundamental truth: Standing beside humanity is the greatest identity of all. Today, we proudly state: We were there. We are here. And we will always stand with humanity.

About Khowai Theatre

Khowai Theatre was established in 1983, and the children’s theatre group “Sundaram” was founded in 1996. We have been actively working with both groups on a regular basis.

Khowai Theatre has staged around 53 productions so far. We have participated in theatre festivals in Delhi as well as various international theatre festivals across India. We also took part in the Olympiad Theatre and International Theatre Festival in Odisha, and our plays have been staged in Tripura, Dehradun (Uttarakhand), and other parts of India. Although we had plans to perform in several other countries, it was not possible due to various limitations; however, we continue to pursue those opportunities.

In Bangladesh, we have regularly performed on different stages, including the National Theatre.

Since our establishment, we have been committed to preserving and promoting our local culture. We regularly work on themes such as Pohela Boishakh and other fading folk traditions, bringing them to the stage. We are also actively engaged with indigenous communities in remote areas—such as hills and tea gardens—encouraging and supporting them in forming theatre groups and arranging performances.

Khowai Theatre has always played a leading role in cultural movements and has consistently stood against communalism. Due to this stance, we have at times faced various challenges and forms of harassment, which we may share in more detail later.

Our children’s theatre wing is also very active, producing and staging plays regularly. Our latest production, “Bolai,” was directed by me.
