Official AITA/IATA Festival Cycle

An Official Festival of AITA/IATA is an international and intercontinental event. The majority of participating groups should come from countries other than the host country, with a significant number of groups representing other continents.

Official Festival status is granted by the AITA/IATA Council to events that meet the requirements set out in the Festival Handbook (guidelines for organising a world festival and world congress).

Adult Festivals

The official AITA/IATA adult festival cycle follows an alternating pattern:

The Mondial du Théâtre in Monaco takes place every odd-numbered fourth year (last one took place in 2025).

The AITA/IATA International Festival in other countries takes place every odd-numbered two years after Monaco, hosted by a member country.

Children’s Festivals

The official AITA/IATA children’s festival cycle is organised every even-numbered two years.

Every second edition is hosted in Lingen, Germany, as the World Festival of Children’s Theatre. The alternating editions may be hosted by another member country, subject to approval by the AITA/IATA Council and compliance with the official festival guidelines.
